These cutters have solid brass shoes, 1/4 inch diameter stainless steel shanks, and large, easy-to-grasp hardwood handles. They use inexpensive single-edge razor blades readily available at local hardware stores and other retail outlets.
When mounted in these cutters, the blade’s edges are slightly above and shielded by the base of the shoe. The lower front edge of the shoe is beveled, thereby exposing the working cutting edges only. The arrangement appreciably reduces the hazard to those handling the cutter of receiving an accidental cut.
The cutters are available in full 1 inch and ½ inch widths and in nominally 24mm (1”) and 12mm (0.5”) widths per the specification presented in the Pressure Sensitive Tape Council (PSTC) publication Test Methods for Pressure Sensitive Adhesive Tapes, Appendix B 2.4, Cutter, specimen.
The cutters are supplied with a softwood storage cradle, the use of which prevents the cutting edges from contacting surfaces that might cause them to be dulled if the cutter is stored haphazardly. A 5/64th inch hex screwdriver for blade removal and replacement, extra 3-56 hex-head cap screws for blade attachment in case the originals are lost, and 10 blades are also included.
